Comics Ah-Bloomin’

I’m in the middle of penciling and inking a new Kid Beowulf short story and wanted to share some of the most recent production pages.  This is for a story tentatively called Shild and the Dragon and takes place in Daneland, several generations before the birth of Beowulf and Grendel. It features younger versions of the characters Shild, Esher, and the Dragon, all of whom we meet in Kid Beowulf and the Blood-Bound Oath.

Early on we meet Esher on his first trip to Daneland. He’s an herbalist and is on the hunt for an elusive plant called the Dragonlily which only grows in Daneland.

Also in Daneland is a hunter by the name of Shild.  Shild’s run into a bit of bad luck – the forests are being poached by outsiders from Germania called Heathobards and they’re eating Shild’s profits. In the scene below, Shild is drinking his sorrows away and ends up picking a fight with the Heathobards.

Eventually, Esher hires Shild to help him find the Dragonlily and Shild leads him into the highlands of Daneland where the flower is rumored to grow. The two get along swimmingly.

They find the flower and a whole lot more!

I’ve still got a little ways to go on the story (pencils, inks, color, and letters) but I hope to have it done in the next couple of months and available on Comixology.
