In an attempt to add some female characters to the mix, the early drafts of Kid Beowulf and the Song of Roland featured Joan of Arc. I soon realized adding Joan made things too anachronistic (even for KidB.), so I dug into the old Carolingian epics again and discovered a female warrior named Bradamant, who was in fact a contemporary of Roland, Oliver and the other Peers. She had an extensive and exciting back-story all her own, much of it revolving around her love for the Saracen knight, Rogero. I decided to put both characters in book two, with the intent to come back to them someday and flesh out their love/hate story.
In the meantime, if you want to read a good novelization of the duo’s adventures then check out Quest of the Warrior Maiden by Linda McCabe!
